PORCELAIN DOLLS

michelle yeboah

Her skin is glass.

It stings like the biting air after a storm

Her fragile bones

are home to fear

and it

       won’t.

               go.

                   away.

She is familiar with this ache

The kind of pain that tells you

her paper heart has been torn before.

“What is love?” She wonders.

She has never tasted that kind of sugar.

But then He comes around.

The sugar is on her lips, in her hair

Now she knows what it feels like

to

love.

But all of a sudden,

She’s become drunk on praise,

she flies too close to the sun,

and her porcelain wings shatter.

He discards her broken pieces.
